Follow these steps to complete the task.
Open the Redact PDF tool
Go to FileGrip’s Redact PDF page. Review the accepted file type and maximum upload size before selecting your document.
Upload the PDF
Choose Select PDF or drag and drop the document into the upload area. FileGrip validates the file before opening the redaction workspace.
Review the PDF preview
Use the preview controls to move between pages and inspect the content. Confirm that you are viewing the correct page before positioning redaction areas.
Draw redaction boxes
Drag over each area that should be hidden. You can add multiple boxes, select an existing box, move it, resize it, or remove it before processing.
Check the box positions
Zoom into the preview and make sure every box fully covers the sensitive content. Use the position and size fields when more precise placement is required.
Choose the page range
Enter the page number or range where the redaction boxes should be applied. Examples may include 1, 1-3, or 1-3,5 depending on the supported page-range format.
Choose the redaction color
Select black for a traditional redaction appearance or white when the covered area should blend with a white page background.
Confirm permanent redaction
Read the permanent-redaction warning and select the confirmation checkbox. This prevents processing until you acknowledge that the covered information cannot be restored from the redacted output.
Process the PDF
Select Redact PDF. Keep the page open while the file uploads. Once FileGrip creates the backend job, processing may continue while the result is prepared.
Download and inspect the result
Download the completed redacted PDF and inspect every affected page at a high zoom level. Confirm that no sensitive content remains visible before sharing the file.

- Make each redaction box slightly larger than the text or image being covered.
- Zoom in before processing so small characters, punctuation, and surrounding details are fully hidden.
- Use separate boxes for content in different positions rather than one oversized box that hides useful information.
- Review every page included in the page range because the same coordinates may cover different content on differently structured pages.
- Use black redaction for clearly visible censorship and white redaction only when it is suitable for the document background.
- Keep the original PDF separate from the redacted copy so the wrong version is not shared accidentally.

What does PDF redaction do?
PDF redaction permanently covers selected areas in the processed output so sensitive information is no longer visible in those locations. You place the redaction areas manually and choose the pages where they should be applied.
Is redaction the same as drawing a black rectangle?
Not always. A simple annotation or shape placed over text may leave the original content available underneath. FileGrip’s backend workflow is intended to create a processed redacted output rather than only showing a temporary visual overlay. You should still inspect the final file before sharing it.
Can redacted information be recovered?
The processed result is intended to make the selected information unavailable in the redacted areas. Because PDF files can contain complex layers, annotations, metadata, and embedded content, you should review the final result carefully and follow any additional compliance process required by your organization.
Can I redact several areas on one page?
Yes. Add multiple redaction boxes and position each one over a separate sensitive area. Every box included in the editor is sent with the processing request.
Can I redact more than one page?
Yes. Enter a page number or supported page range. The configured redaction boxes are applied using the same relative coordinates on each selected page.
Why must I review every page in the range?
Pages can use different layouts. A box placed over an address on page one might cover unrelated content on another page. Use separate processing jobs when page layouts differ significantly.
Should I use black or white redaction?
Black is the clearest and most widely recognized redaction style. White can blend into a white page but may make the removed area less obvious. Choose the color that matches your document and disclosure requirements.
Does FileGrip automatically detect sensitive information?
No. You are responsible for identifying sensitive content and placing the redaction boxes. Review the complete document for names, numbers, signatures, images, headers, footers, annotations, and repeated information.
Will the original PDF be changed?
No. FileGrip processes the uploaded copy and creates a separate downloadable result. Your original file on your device remains unchanged unless you intentionally replace it after downloading.
Can I redact a scanned PDF?
Yes, provided the scanned PDF can be uploaded and processed. Because scanned pages are images, carefully inspect the preview and place boxes over every visible part of the sensitive content.
Can I redact a password-protected PDF?
A protected PDF may need to be unlocked first using the correct password and proper authorization. After creating an unlocked copy, return to Redact PDF and apply the required redactions.
Why is the final file larger than the original?
Processing can change the PDF structure, embedded resources, compression, or page rendering. The output may therefore be larger or smaller than the source depending on the document.
Are uploaded PDFs stored permanently?
FileGrip is designed around temporary processing. Uploaded files and generated results should expire according to the platform’s current deletion policy. Download and review the result before it expires.
