When to use Unlock PDF
This tool is useful in situations like these:
- You own a password-protected PDF and want an easier-to-open copy.
- You need to process the PDF using another FileGrip tool.
- A document must be archived without requiring a password each time.
- You need to convert, split, merge, rotate, or edit an authorized PDF.
- You want to remove protection before sharing the document with approved recipients.
- A workflow or application cannot accept password-protected PDFs.
Step-by-step
Follow these steps to complete the task.
Open Unlock PDF
Open the Unlock PDF tool from the FileGrip tools page.
Upload the protected PDF
Select the locked PDF from your device or drag and drop it into the upload area. FileGrip checks the file type and upload-size limit before continuing.
Review the selected file
Check the file name and size to confirm that you uploaded the correct protected document.
Enter the current password
Type the password currently required to open the PDF. The password must be correct for FileGrip to create an unlocked copy.
Confirm your permission
Select the confirmation stating that you own the PDF or have authorization to unlock it.
Start unlocking
Select Unlock PDF. Keep the page open while the file uploads. After the backend accepts the job, processing may continue independently.
Wait for password verification
FileGrip verifies the supplied password and removes supported PDF protection settings from the generated copy.
Download the unlocked PDF
Download the completed file and open it without entering the previous password. Keep the original protected file until you confirm the result.
Helpful tips
Small checks that can improve your result.
- Enter the password exactly, including uppercase letters, lowercase letters, spaces, and symbols.
- Use the visibility button to check the password before submitting it.
- Only remove protection when you have clear authorization from the document owner.
- Keep the protected original as a backup in case the unlocked copy is shared accidentally.
- Store sensitive unlocked PDFs in a secure location because they no longer require the original password.
- Use Protect PDF again if the document needs a new password after editing.
- If unlocking succeeds but another tool still rejects the file, download the result and upload the new unlocked copy.
Your file is handled temporarily
FileGrip temporarily receives and processes files solely to perform the operation you select. Files are not sold, used for advertising, or used to train AI models.
Read the file deletion promiseCommon questions
Helpful answers about Unlock PDF.
Can FileGrip unlock a PDF without the password?
No. You must provide the correct current password. FileGrip is not a password cracking, bypass, or recovery service.
Will my original protected PDF be changed?
No. FileGrip creates a separate unlocked result. The original file stored on your device remains unchanged.
Why must I confirm ownership or permission?
PDF protection may be used to control access to confidential or copyrighted material. You should only remove protection when you own the file or have explicit authorization.
Is my PDF password saved in the browser?
The Unlock PDF interface is designed not to store the password in the URL or local storage. The password is cleared from the page state after the backend accepts the job.
Can I protect the PDF again later?
Yes. After completing your changes, use FileGrip’s Protect PDF tool to apply a new password and selected permission settings.
Will unlocking remove a digital signature?
Unlocking password protection is separate from digital signatures. However, modifying and re-saving a signed PDF can affect signature validity, so review digitally signed documents carefully.
Why does the downloaded file still have restrictions?
Some documents contain certificate security, rights-management controls, or limitations that are different from normal password encryption. These may not be removable by the standard Unlock PDF workflow.
Are uploaded files stored permanently?
FileGrip is designed for temporary processing. Download the result before it expires and review the current privacy and file-deletion policies for full retention details.
